tips

4.a.Food

Fifty percent of food ends up in the garbage. Try these easy steps to make a difference in your home:

1. Make a weekly menu plan. It could be as simple as choosing the basic ingredients (e.g. pasta and sauce) or picking a specific recipe (pasta puttanesca, page 47 of your favourite cookbook).

2. Shop once a week and buy only those ingredients you need. This is where planning the dinners comes in. Check what is in the cupboard, freezer, and refrigerator so you don't duplicate. Don't forget breakfast and lunch items too.

3. Make the right amount of food.

4. Save and eat any leftovers.

5. If anything is starting to look "aged", use it up quickly. Put extra veggies in the dinner. Freeze them if necessary. Or make a pot of soup or stock with the remainders. Wrinkly apples still make fine applesauce, while overripe bananas can be frozen until banana bread time.

6. If you do have to chuck out food, make sure you compost any produce.

7. Go through the fridge and freezer regularly - use up containers before the "best by" date.

Buy Organic

If you want to buy organic foods, but can't afford the extra cost, choose the foods that are typically higher in pesticides to buy organic. These include: apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, grapes, peaches, pears, potatoes, raspberries, spinach, and strawberries.

Buy Local

Don't just buy organic. Buy local. Yes, organic foods are better for the environment in terms of their production, but if you are buying organic blueberries that are shipped in from another country, are you really doing a lot of good? Mass-producing, packaging and shipping something thousands of miles is extremely costly to the environment. Shop for locally made items and shop in a group if possible. Try to avoid products which come layered in a lot of packaging.

Wines

Purchase wine that has been made in your area. If you're not near wine country, at least buy wine made in your land or nearby areas. Also, choose wine with real cork stoppers.

5.b.Plastic

Just because you see the triangular arrows with a number inside on the bottom of a plastic container doesn't mean it can be recycled.

There are 7 major varieties that consumers should know in order to have a more greener life style:

#1:Pet or PETE makes most water and soda bottles and it is not meant for reuse. Easy to recycle.

#2:HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) makes many toys, milk, detergent and shampoo bottles. Easy to recycle.

#3:Vinyl or PVC makes pipe, shower curtains, toys, wallpaper, yoga mats, some flip-flops and food wrap. This is the worst of all the common consumer plastics.

#4:LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene) makes plastic wrap and grocery bags. It's easy and effective to recycle, but not widely accepted at recycling facilities.

#5:PP (Polypropylene) makes yougurt tubs and diapers. It's not widely accepted at recycling facilities.

#6:PS (Polystyrene) present in lots of coffee cups and take out containers, is usually referred to by the trademarked name Styrofoam. It may leach styrene into food ad hot beverages. #7:Other -> usually polycarbonate, most presented in baby bottles, 5-gallon (19 litres) water jugs and hikers' water bottles. It may leach bisphenol-A (BPA)

Toothbrushes

Check out the products at Preserve Products and pick up some toothbrushes made from recycled plastic. And then, when you're done using them, you can send them back to Preserve Products, in the packaging they provided when they shipped them to you, and they will recycle your toothbrushes, to give them yet another life!

Toys

Recycle your children's toys by boxing some up and bringing them out again after a few months. Your child will feel like they have new toys.

6.f.Moving on

Don't buy cardboard boxes! Re-use them: Why would you go out to a retailer and spend money on a few boxes when you can get them for free elsewhere, and re-use them before they get recycled. All it takes is going out to a place like McDonald's, Supermarket and getting boxes they are about to recycle. Usually you can just go straight to the recycle bin and grab them. Now you are not contributing to cardboard production because you are re-using what has already been used.

Make your own packaging: When you are packing dishes and other fragile items, you do not need to start buying bubble wrap. In fact, if you keep packaging from parcels you have received in the past, you can re-use those items, saving money on packaging and the environment.

Offsett your move through the funding of environmental programs and renewable energy technology.

Recycle the boxes: Unless you plan to move again soon, why not recycle those cardboard boxes so that they can be made into something else? That is the last step in your move 'green-style'.
